Announcements: Paper Workshops and Colloquium Visits

A few announcements:

There will be two paper workshops in the near future.

1) Dr. Eric Doxtader will be visiting KU this week and delivering a colloquium lecture on Rhetoric and Human Rights and work-shopping a paper.
  • Lecture: Wednesday, March 6 at 4pm Dr. Doxtader.
  • Paper Workshop: Thursday, March 7 at 2:30pm. Contact Dave Tell for locationdetails and a copy of the paper.
  • Erik Doxtader is a Professor of Rhetoric at the University of South Carolina and a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation in Cape Town. Set at the intersection of rhetorical and critical theory, Professor Doxtader’s research focuses on classical and contemporary questions of discovery, including the ways in which rhetoric’s potential shapes subjectivity, recognition, human rights, and ethical life. His work has been supported by the MacArthur Foundation, the Social Science Research Council, the Mellon Foundation, and the South African National Research Foundation. He has published numerous books and essays on transitional justice, the rhetorical dynamics of reconciliation, and the discourse of human rights. His recent books include In the Balance: South Africans Debate Reconciliation and Inventing the Potential of Rhetorical Culture. Doxtader has twice received the National Communication Association’s Golden Monograph Award. His 2009 book, With Faith in the Works of Words: The Beginnings of Reconciliation in South Africa, was awarded the Rhetoric Society of America’s Book Prize. Doxtader is currently completing a book, entitled The Barbarism of Transitional Justice, and undertaking a collaborative three-year project, supported by the Australian Research Council, on resistance to reconciliation in Australia, South Africa, and Northern Ireland. He lives in Columbia, South Carolina, and Cape Town, South Africa.
2) Also in the South African/Human Rights vein, our very own Jaclyn Howell will be workshopping an amazing paper on Caster Semenya
  • The workshop is on Saturday, at 10:45 am on March 9th in Bailey. We'd love to see you there!
